Why start early? Puppies grow at a tremendous rate and it's easy to forget that
whilst they are growing physically, their brains are also developing.
In fact, some say that their brains grow to 90% capacity by 12
weeks of age! Think about that! If we don't help them to fill that
growth productively,
then they will learn how to misbehave all by themselves - they
just can't help it! Their fun-filled, inquisitive nature will force
them to try something out, they'll find it rewarding (in their
own way) and do it again. For instance, puppy bites - children run
about and scream - puppy finds this great fun - and the lesson's
learned!
And, all of this before they can even start
going to a training class!
The Pawsability Puppy Program gives you the knowledge to start teaching at 6 weeks of age
and to help your puppy grow into a well mannered, sociable,
happy and healthy dog. It has been specially created to help puppies of all ages, but aims to provide help especially for
young puppies, covering aspects such as house training,
biting, jumping, nutrition, safe socialisation,
health and gentle, hands-off, modern and effective, basic training techniques.
We
now know that, whilst there are definitely genetics involved
in some problem behaviours, most can be prevented if we start early
enough in the puppy's life to teach them how to behave, build
their confidence and therefore avoid problems occurring in the
first place.

Training classes are great for
many dogs and pups, but don't wait until then to make a start
- once your puppy has completed their vaccination program,
they will already have picked up many bad habits.
It really
is far easier to prevent behaviours forming than to get rid
of them once they are established. So, start as soon as you
get your puppy home. The old story about not being able to
train a dog until they are 6 months old is simply wrong!
Early learning also vitally enhances your pup's ability to
learn new things later in life too.

Training a puppy only takes a few minutes each day and
it’s far easier to teach your puppy never
to pull on the lead, never to jump up and never to snap at your hand, than
to stop it later.
