Socialisation is the term generally used when discussing the things
we need to do to get our pets world-wise.
We need to teach them how to socially interact with people and the other animals which they need to live with e.g. get on well with visitors to the home, and with other dogs in the park. And we need to habituate them to things so that they become oblivious to them e.g. being used to the hoover and not being afraid of traffic. Puppies start to comprehend fear at about 3 weeks of age. Once they are 12 weeks old it’s almost too late to start to teach them about new things. At that stage they think - “oh, that’s new, I better run away!”. At 3 weeks, they just think “oops, what’s that?”. So the more they experience, safely, from 3 weeks old, the better. You don’t get your puppy home until about 7 weeks of age, and a lot of learning opportunity has past by. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you purchase your puppy from a reliable breeder who has reared the pups inside the house, in the family area, where they have had plenty of opportunity to hear household noises, and meet lots of different adults and children. START NOW!!!!! All too many behavioural problems can be traced back to poor early socialisation. Call or email us to find out more about the Puppy Early Learning program or to receive your FREE puppy socialisation checklist. Safety! Puppies are at a high risk of contracting disease prior to completion of their vaccination program, and it’s therefore risky to take your puppy places to help them socialise before then. So, always check with your vet before taking your puppy out to make sure that the risk of disease in your area is low. There are however, many things which you can do to get the process started early, such as taking your puppy out in the car (safely secured), or carrying them places, and even making sure that they see a wide range of things around the house - really work that hoover, and bring out the lawn mower - even in winter!
