Dog Behaviour Help > What is a Dog Behaviour Problem?

Basically, a dog behaviour problem is something which you'd rather your dog didn't do!

If your dog doesn't come to you when called - is that a training or a behaviour problem?

First, ask yourself - have you ever actually trained your dog that coming to you is a beneficial behaviour? If not, then have a look at our training notes on teaching your dog to come when called. If you've done some training - in class or at home - and are still having problems, then you can begin to think of this more as a behavioural problem. You're dog is having difficulty learning, difficulty listening to you; would rather play with other dogs etc......

Ask yourself the same question on other dog training problems such as pulling on the lead, or jumping up etc.

Dogs need to be taught how to live in our world. They need trained to help them understand the rules of living with their humans. If training is difficult because for instance, your dog is too excited, or distracted by other dogs, or people, then perhaps you need to think in terms of behaviour therapy.

Dog behaviour problems range from fear and aggression to hyper-activity and depression. Behaviour therapy works with training to help your dog overcome their problems. You don't just need to live with the problem - and your dog will be less stressed too! For instance, look here for help with your dogs fireworks fear, or look here for help with your dog pulling on the lead.
