To set up a consultation, please simply contact us. We'll take a few details and check up on your actual requirements, discuss the procedure and costs and set up an appointment which is convenient for you and your family.
Where are behaviour consults avaiable?
We provide help for your dog Aberdeen and surrounding areas and coming soon..... Inverness and areas.
What happens at the consult?
- The consult lasts for about 2 hours.
- Firstly, we analyse the problem, or problems. Many times when a dog is misbehaving, there are a number of inter-relating things going on in the dog's life. Our approach is holistic - what that means is that we look at the dog as a whole - considering how the dog feels about life in general, and obviously too, considering how they feel when incidents happen.
- We then form the behaviour modification program. This usually looks at 4-6 different areas, and devises changes, exercises, management, training and other things to help you to progress as effectively as possible.
- And, yes, we need to see your dog! (Strange question, maybe, but it is asked....)
The objective of the consultation :
- The aim of the consultation is to help you understand what it is you need to do, and how to go about that by yourself. So a large part of the consult is about helping you to understand what is affecting your dog, and why, and about helping you to understand how to carry out the tasks and changes that are needed.
- Training generally forms a significant part of the program. We help you to understand what to do : where to start and how to progress.
- Generally, we make a start at some of the exercises at the time too, so you will have a chance to practice.
- Training and behaviour guidance notes are provided, as relevant
What happens after :
- We will send out your behaviour modification program soon after, so, you will generally have that in a few days.
- 6 months free phone / email support is included in the price. We strongly advise that you make good use of this service. Here, we can discuss progress, and ensure that your dog is making good progress.
- Sometimes, additional steps are required, or additional aspects benefit from help. We may recommend a local trainer to help you with that, or of course, follow up sessions can be arranged. Or we may well be able to talk these things through, perhaps with some follow up notes.
What is our overall approach?
Our approach is looking at your dog from an emotional stand point - what makes him tick, what motivates him (rightly or wrongly), and what we can do to change his perception of things - and make him therefore want to change the way he behaves. We help your dog feel differently about things, using safe, reward based methods that help to put the dog in the right frame of mind, so that he can actually learn.
We will not ask you to ignore your dog or eat out your dog's bowl! We do not use choke chains or electric collars! And, we will not ask you to do anything that you don't fully and completely understand - no magic! no working simply on trust! We are of course happy to answer any of your questions on the various methods of training and behaviour work. All the conflicting advice can be very confusing sometimes.
Pawsability works with your vet to ensure that a fully holistic approach is taken. Involving your vet also ensures that they are satisfied that your pet's behaviour is not due to some clinical problem, and that they are happy for the things to proceed on a behavioural basis.
