Dog and Cat Fireworks Fear - 5th Nov update ........ | ||||||||||||||
The fireworks are now here..... It is now too late to be thinking about desensitising your dog or cat and certainly too late to re-condition them to make them think that fireworks are fun. All that can be done now is to set up the den area and make your pet feel as safe as possible, and follow the rest of the notes and guidelines in the dealing with dog fireworks fear help sheet. You may also need to contact your vet for help or look at the range of complementary therapies which can also help - probably a herbal remedy at this stage. The great new booklet - Fireworks Fear - can also really help you understand what your dog's going through And then what? Well, you have a choice. If you're in an area where there are likely to be fireworks at new year, then wait for a couple of weeks and then get a dap and the cd's and start to work with your pet. If you think you're going to be spared the new year fireworks, then wait until perhaps April - when the days are longer and then start on your fix your dog or cats fireworks fear program. (Afterall, your pet is probably now also scared of the dark). And in either case, start working on a clicker training program to provide a further confidence boost for your pet. Don't think it will go away next year - this is highly unlikely - it's more likely that it will actually get worse! For further help and advice contact a qualified pet behaviour therapist near you.
